The Birth Foundation
Birthing with Integrity, Respect, Trust and Honor

A doula is a woman specially trained, experienced and educated in the perinatal period and childbirth; she brings these tools to each birth.  Combined with calm energy, an unbiased point of view and a soulful heart she helps to guide birthing couples through pregnancy and the process of childbirth.  The goal of a doula is not to advocate for her clients, but instead to provides the birthing couple with unbiased information, so they have the confidence to advocate for themselves and ultimately achieve an empowered birth experience.

Physically, a doula can help provide comfort through acupressure, effleurage, position change, double hip squeeze and comforting touch.  Emotionally, a doula provides a safe space for the couple to express their fears, and process this amazing experience as it unfolds.  And mentally, doulas can teach and demonstrate breathing techniques, visualization and relaxation exercises both as practice in prenatal visits and in the journey of birth.
It is no coincidence that doulas contribute to better birth outcomes; studies performed by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cochrane Review and The Journal of Perinatal Education have recognized that doulas help to:

  • Reduce the instances of Cesarean Section.

  • Increase chance of successful breastfeeding.

  • Reduce desire for pain medication.

  • Increase chance of spontaneous vaginal delivery.

  • Reduce use of synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin).

  • Contribute to a more positive birth experience for both mother & partner.

  • Reduce duration of labor.

  • Reduce incidences of postpartum depression.

  • Reduce second stage interventions such as forceps, vacuum and episiotomy

  • And so much more
